EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern took the opening set against 15th-ranked Michigan Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena, but the Wolverines responded by taking the next three as the Wildcats fall 25-21, 17-25, 12-25, 17-25.
Northwestern (14-12, 5-9 Big Ten) continued to establish itself as one of the conference's top blocking teams, finishing with a 17.5-4 advantage over Michigan (20-7, 8-6 Big Ten). Junior Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) once again tied a career-high with 10 blocks, her second 10-block performance in as many nights.
Redshirt freshman Kathryn Chrystal (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) also matched a personal-best with seven, including a pair of solo blocks, with junior Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) adding six blocks of her own.
Brittani Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) added seven with junior Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) knocking down six. Glab's 30 assists was a team-high, with senior Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) digging a match-best 13 attempts.
Northwestern fed off the momentum of Friday's four-set victory over Michigan State early in the match, as with the opening set tied at eight, the Wildcats put together a 5-0 run to build a 13-8 advantage. NU continued to extend that lead, pushing it to as many as eight at 20-12. The Wolverines were able to get to within three on a couple of occasions, but the Wildcats held off the rally, taking the opening set 25-21.
But the opening set loss seemed to light a fire with Michigan as the Wolverines gained control of the match in set two with a 25-17 victory. Michigan dominated set three, cruising to the 25-12 victory before closing out Northwestern 25-17 in set four.
Three different Wolverines finished with double-digit kills, led by Alex Hunt's 15 with Juliana Paz adding 13 and Veronica Rood finishing with 10 on the evening.
Northwestern heads back on the road for a pair of tough Big Ten challenges, beginning Friday in Columbus, Ohio, when the Wildcats battle the Buckeyes at 7 p.m. CT. NU then heads east to University Park, Pa., to do battle with top-ranked and undefeated Penn State Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.
