EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern announced its 2009-10 women's basketball schedule today, featuring an Evanston-friendly nonconference slate to start off the season. Ten of NU's first 12 contests will be played at Welsh-Ryan Arena, highlighted by the 26th annual Doubletree White Invitational and a Big Ten/ACC Challenge showdown against Clemson.
The 'Cats raise the curtain on this year's campaign on Nov. 13 at Toledo before returning home to face SIU-Edwardsville (Nov. 20), IPFW (Nov. 22) and intra-city Big East foe DePaul (Nov. 24). NU continues its hosting duties when it welcomes Iowa State, Penn and the College of Charleston to Evanston for the 26th annual Mildred and Roger L. White Invitational Nov. 27-28.
Northwestern then entertains Clemson at Welsh-Ryan Arena as part of the third-annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 3 before opening its conference season on Dec. 6 when it hosts Purdue. After a week hiatus, the 'Cats travel to Kansas State for a showdown with their mascot brethren on Dec. 13th before concluding the nonconference portion of the schedule at home with contests against Arkansas (Dec. 17), Chicago State (Dec. 19) and Loyola Chicago (Dec. 22).
League action resumes on Dec. 28 when the Wildcats travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines before a two-game homestand against Ohio State (Dec. 31) and Penn State (Jan. 3). Northwestern plays four of its next five games on the road, traveling to Minnesota (Jan. 7), Purdue (Jan. 10), Indiana (Jan. 21) and Iowa (Jan. 24). The lone home game during that stretch is against the Golden Gophers on Jan. 17.
Home games against Michigan State (Jan. 28) and Michigan (Feb. 4) sandwich a trip to Madison when NU tangles with the Badgers on Jan. 31, a contest that will be carried live on the Big Ten Network. Two road games at Illinois (Feb. 11) and at Michigan State (Feb. 14) precede a pair of home affairs against Indiana (Feb. 18) and Iowa (Feb. 21). The contest against the Spartans will also be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
The Wildcats conclude the regular season with a road trip to Columbus (Feb. 25) to face Ohio State and a showdown with intra-state rival Illinois on Feb. 28 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The 2009 Big Ten Tournament will be held March 4-7 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.
