NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Chelsea Armstrong scored for the fifth consecutive game and Northwestern received contributions from five different goal scorers to overcome Sacred Heart 5-0 Sunday at Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn. Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Wirth stopped two shots on the way to her first career shutout, helping NU to its first 4-1 start to a season since 2005.
Northwestern dominated the action from start to finish, firing 13 shots in the first half and 15 in the second half compared to just four shots mustered all afternoon by Sacred Heart. NU also earned 11 penalty corners while SHU managed only one.
Armstrong extended her scoring streak with a goal 10 minutes into the game, deflecting in a cross from Elizabeth Dobbs to give Northwestern a 1-0 advantage. After taking the one-goal lead into halftime, Armstrong and Dobbs reversed roles on NU's next scoring play as Dobbs put away a pass from the Australia native for her second goal of 2009.
Seven minutes later, Northwestern struck again off a penalty corner when sophomore Regan Mooney scored her first career goal off a hit by Courtney Plaster-Strange, who led all players on the afternoon with 11 shots.
NU tacked on the final two goals in the last 10 minutes of the contest, as yesterday's overtime hero Kaylee Pohlmeyer scored once again when she put home a rebound created by a penalty corner. Senior Stephanie Fortson capped the offensive outburst by Northwestern with her third goal of the season and the sixth of her career in the 63rd minute.
Northwestern last had five different players score goals in a 6-1 victory against Saint Louis on Sept. 19 of last year.
NU returns to Lakeside Field on Thursday for a 3 p.m. tilt with Stanford. Fans who can't make it to the game can follow the username @NU_sportsLIVE on Twitter for live in-game updates.
