NU Off to Fast Start as Mayer Leads 'Cats in Season-Opener

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Northwestern opened its 2009 campaign Friday at the DePaul Invitational on a warm evening at Channel Runne Park in Chicago, where true freshman Allegra Mayer placed eighth overall with a time of 14:55.74 to lead the Wildcats. Northwestern finished third as a team at the 4K meet, eight points behind second-place Loyola (Chicago).

Sophomores Rachel Kaminski and Hallie Busta crossed just three and four seconds behind Mayer, respectively, to take 10th and 11th overall. Senior Paulina Garcia (15:25.40) took 20th while sophomore Rachel Edwards (15:31.61) rounded out the top five finishers for the Wildcats.

Marquette notched first place at the meet, placing three of the top four finishers including Jayne Grabinski, who crossed first overall in 14:28.31.

Northwestern will endure its first 5K race of the season on Sept. 12 at the Huskie Invitational in DeKalb, Ill.
