EVANSTON, Ill. -- Just before kicking off her first regular season as Northwestern head coach, Tracey Fuchs is gearing up to coach the United States squad in the 2009 BDO Women's Junior World Cup hosted by Harvard University from Aug. 3-16. Four years ago, Fuchs guided the U.S. to a seventh-place showing in the 2005 World Cup, the Americans' best-ever finish at the event.
Fuchs announced the members this year's official squad on July 19 following the 2009 Junior National Training Camp at Boston College. The U-21 roster is comprised of 18 athletes representing seven Division I universities and two high schools.
"I always feel privileged to coach our Junior National team in international events such as these," said Fuchs, who played in four World Cups and racked up more career caps than any other player as a member of the United States senior national team. "We had a lot of success in Chile in 2005 and I think we have a talented enough group to build on that while playing on our home turf this year."
Fuchs first took over as the head coach of the junior national team in 2005, when she was named USA Field Hockey's National Coach of the Year. The following year, Fuchs served on the U.S. women's national team coaching staff for the World Cup in Spain.
The 2009 BDO Women's Junior World Cup is the largest international field hockey event ever to be held in the United States, with almost 300 athletes from 16 nations participating in the tournament.
The 16 national teams competing in the tournament are: Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Chile, China, England, France, Germany, India, Lithuania, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and the United States.
