July 18, 2009

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior quarterback Mike Kafka (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) has been named one of 20 candidates for the 2009 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award given annually to the nation's top senior signal caller.

Kafka is one of three Big Ten quarterbacks on the list, joining Penn State's Daryll Clark and Illinois' Juice Williams. Kafka started a pair of games in 2008 in place of injured starter C.J. Bacher, setting the conference's single-game record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 217 in a win at Minnesota.

The Johnny Unitas Award was first given in 1987. It is bestowed by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc.
