Goebbert Selected by Houston in 13th Round of MLB First-Year Player Draft

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University junior outfielder Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) was selected by the Houston Astros on Wednesday in the 13th round (401st overall) of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

He is the 56th Wildcat in school history to be drafted and the 44th under head coach Paul Stevens.

Goebbert, who had his junior season cut short due to injury, hit .280 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 23 RBI in 30 games for the Wildcats in 2009. As a sophomore, he hit .353 with a school single-season record 22 doubles as well as 10 homers and 48 runs batted in and was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection for his efforts.

The most recent Northwestern player to be drafted by Houston was Mark Ori who was selected by the organization in the 14th round of the 2005 draft. He went on to be named the Astros' Minor League Position Player of the Year last season and is currently playing for the Double A Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League.
