STILLWATER, Okla. -- Northwestern entered the NCAA South Central Regional as the No. 9 seed, but leaves it as one of five teams to earn a berth in the NCAA National Championships May 27-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, after tying for fourth place in the 13-team field at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater.
NU was paired with No. 21 LSU and Wichita State in the final round, firing a 22-over 310 to best LSU by two strokes and Wichita by seven on Saturday. That total put the Wildcats in the clubhouse in sixth position overall with all five teams ahead of them still on the course. As the afternoon progressed, No. 46 Baylor and No. 16 TCU fell to push NU into one of the five qualifying spots for Inverness.
When all was said and done, Northwestern's three-day total of 50-over 914 (302-302-310) knotted it with No. 16 TCU, three strokes ahead of No. 21 LSU in sixth. The Wildcats and Horned Frogs join No. 4 Oklahoma State (+17), No. 9 Arkansas (+39) and No. 28 Tennessee-Chattanooga (+43) as the NCAA national qualifiers from the South Central Region.
Northwestern will make its 23rd all-time appearance at the NCAA National Championships and its sixth under head coach Pat Goss. The Wildcats made four-straight trips from 1997-2000, placing seventh, 19th, third and fourth, respectively. NU last made the field in 2006.
Big Ten Freshman of the Year Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) shot a 7-over 79 on Saturday to finish as NU's top golfer on the weekend, carding a 10-over 226 (74-73-79) to place 13th overall.
Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) carded a 4-over 76, playing even-par golf after going double-bogey-bogey on holes 9-11. He finished the Regional at 14-over 230 (78-76-76) to take 28th overall.
Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) hit a rough patch on holes 5-7, playing them in 4-over. He was able to recover, however, and play his final 11 holes at even-par, including a birdie on the 18th to finish the day at 4-over 76 and the tournament at 15-over 231 (78-77-76), good for 30th in the individual standings.
Senior Andy DeKeuster (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) fired a 7-over 79 Saturday to finish the Regional in 57th position with a 24-over 240 (78-83-79). Junior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), who carded NU's best round of the tournament with an opening-day even-par 72, had a rough day at the office Saturday with a 16-over 88. He took 46th at 20-over 236 (72-76-88).
