WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Sophomore Kelsey Lindenschmidt's (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) 14-over 158 puts her in a tie for 13th place as Northwestern sits in a tie for fifth through the first 36 holes of the 2009 Big Ten Championships. The Wildcats shoot a 63-over 639 over the first two rounds and enter Saturday's third round tied with Wisconsin.
After a less-than-ideal start to the three-day, 72-hole tournament, the Wildcats responded in round two, shooting a 24-over 312--the fourth-lowest score of the round--to jump from seventh to fifth. Lindenschmidt recovered from an 8-over 80 in round one to put together a 6-over 78 in round two, and sits in the clubhouse tied for 13th at 14-over. She leads freshman teammate Kylie Fuller (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) by one stroke, as Fuller is tied for 18th overall after a 15-over 159 (80-79).
In her final Big Ten Championships, senior Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) put together the best round of the day for NU, finishing round two with a 4-over 76 to put her in a tie for 32nd place with 19-over 163 (87-76). She is joined there by sophomore teammate Innapha Tantanavivat (Bangkok, Thailand/David Leadbetter Academy), who is also at 19-over after an 84-79 performance Friday.
Freshman Alexandra Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) enters round three at 21-over 165 (83-82). She holds a two stroke lead over sister Rebecca Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), who will be looking for the hot scoring streak she had found over the past four tournaments after posting a 23-over 167 through the first 36 holes.
11th-ranked Purdue, the reigning Big Ten champions, is starting to pull away from the field on its home course, shooting a 33-over 609 on day one and holding an 18-stroke advantage on second-place Ohio State (51-over 627). Michigan State is currently third at 53-over 629, two strokes back of the Buckeyes and two shots better than rival Michigan's 55-over 631.
The Wildcats hold a little bit of breathing room over the bottom half of the leaderboard, entering Saturday's third round with a five stroke lead over seventh-place Iowa (68-over 644) and an eight shot advantage over eighth-place Illinois (71-over 647). Indiana sits in ninth at 73-over 649, holding a slim one stroke edge on both Penn State and Minnesota (74-over 650).
Third round play at the Big Ten Championships gets underway at 8 a.m. Central as the teams will only play 18 holes Saturday. Live scoring of the third round is available at Golfstat.com.
