Tammy Williams Earns USA National Team Selection Camp Invite

April 10, 2009

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior shortstop Tammy Williams (Roscoe, Mo./Osceola) is one of 27 athletes who have accepted an invitation to the 2009 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp June 8-12 in Chula Vista, Calif., the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) announced today.

The invitation is the second of Williams' career; she also participated in the camp in 2007. In past years, former Wildcats Eileen Canney and Garland Cooper also have been invited to the camp.

The camp will be used to select teams for several events this summer. On the schedule for the USA Softball Women's National Team program this year are a handful international events including the World Cup of Softball presented by KFC in Oklahoma City, Okla., July 16-20. The World Cup will feature the top four finishers from the 2008 Olympic Games including a Gold medal game rematch between Japan and the United States.

Williams currently is a top-25 finalist for USA Softball's Collegiate Player of the Year award and is a top-10 finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. She is a three-time NFCA All-American and the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year.

Current Northwestern volunteer assistant coach Lauren Lappin, a veteran of the USA Softball Women's National Team who played in the Beijing Olympics last summer, also has accepted an invitation to the camp.

Northwestern head coach Kate Drohan is one of 14 coaches in the Women's National Team coaching pool for the 2009-2012 quadrennium.
