EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Sophie Ewald (Berlin, Germany/Droste-Huelshoff Oberschule/Barron (Wis.)) continued to thrive in NU's spring track season, this time nabbing first place in the 5K at the Purdue Mike Pohlein Invitational on Saturday. Ewald crossed in 17:10.41 to best a field that included runners from Purdue, Notre Dame, Louisville and DePaul.
This is the second victory of the spring for Ewald, who also won the 3,000-meter race at the Margaret Bradley Invitational in Chicago in February. She is coming off a freshman campaign in which she ran in seven events for Northwestern and placed first on the team in four of them.
Ewald finished six seconds clear of Notre Dame's Beth Tacl, who took second in the event.
Five other Wildcats were among the 36-runner field, led by junior Paulina Garcia (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood), who finished 11th with a time of 18:37.03. Freshman Molly Waterhouse (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) placed 19th in 19:08.95. Complete results for the race are available by visiting the Purdue Web site.
Northwestern is back in action on Friday in the Chicagoland Championships at the University of Chicago.
