EVANSTON, Ill. -- Former Wildcat Shannon Schneeman earned the opportunity to participate in the preseason camp of the Chicago Red Stars of the new Women's Professional Soccer League. Schneeman, who finished her Northwestern career fourth on NU's all-time points list, was chosen from a pool of 70 players at the team's open tryout.
"We are so proud of Shannon for earning her way into preseason camp with the Red Stars," head coach Stephanie Erickson said. "All of the NU players represented our program wonderfully and were extremely competitive."
Former Wildcats Kelsey Hans and Tabitha Lowey also participated in the open tryout. The preseason training camp for the Red Stars will begin March 1 and that first training session will be held on NU's campus.
"We are excited about the Red Stars and have started to foster an excellent relationship with the club," Erickson said. "We look forward to playing them on March 7 and hosting many of their training sessions here on NU's campus. It is an exciting time for women's soccer in this country and we are proud to have Shannon representing our program in the new league."
Schneeman was one of the most dynamic players in Northwestern history. As a sophomore in 2004, she tallied 15 points on five goals and five assists. After missing all of 2005 due to injury, Schneeman returned to the pitch and did not miss a step. She tallied another five goals in 2006, but saved her best for her senior season in 2007. In 20 games as a senior, Schneeman racked up a career-best nine goals and 20 points -- including five game-winning goals -- en route to a second-team All-Big Ten nod and third-team All-Great Lakes Region selection.
After graduation, Schneeman played professional soccer in Finland. The Wildcats begin their spring schedule with contests against Purdue and the aforementioned Chicago Red Stars at the Lake Barrington Field House on March 7th.
