"Pink Zone" Event Highlights Women's Health Night on Thursday as Wildcats Battle Indiana

Feb. 17, 2009

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's women's basketball program, in partnership with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, is hosting a Women's Health Night on Thursday, Feb. 19 when the Wildcats welcome Indiana to Welsh-Ryan Arena for a 7 p.m. tip. The game also will serve as Northwestern's official "Pink Zone" game for the season. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to support efforts to raise awareness and funding for the fight against breast cancer.

One hour prior to the event, healthcare professionals from Northwestern Memorial Hospital will be on hand at Welsh-Ryan Arena providing free health screening as well as information on a variety of topics related to women's health including nutrition, exercise, heart health and cancer-related issues.

In recognition of the event, Northwestern's women's basketball team will be wearing special pink uniforms for the game. The jerseys will be auctioned off at the event and on NUsports.com, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, a charitable organization committed to playing a part in the fight against breast cancer through raising money for research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Check NUsports.com the week following the event for the start of bidding.

With over 1,250 schools and organizations participating, the WBCA "Pink Zone" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

The WBCA began the WBCA "Pink Zone," formerly known as "Think Pink," in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research.

Tickets for the event are only $2 each prior to the day of the event. Tickets are regular price on Feb. 19 ($7 for adults and $4 for youth). For more information on this event or other future Northwestern women's basketball games, email wildcatmarketing@northwestern.edu.
