CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- Northwestern advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Match Play Championship Friday morning with a 3-3 tiebreak win over Penn State at Heron Bay Golf Club. NU now will face Illinois Friday afternoon.

Northwestern and Penn State each won a pair of matches, with the remaining two ending up all square after 18 holes of play. With the score 3-3 following the two wins and two ties (worth .5 of a point), the match was decided on a total points tiebreak based on how many holes each competitor won by, giving NU a 6-3 tiebreak victory.

Freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) was Northwestern's big winner Friday morning, defeating Penn State's Tommy McDonagh 6 and 5 to earn a win for the Wildcats and six points in the tiebreak. Senior Andy DeKeuster (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) also was declared the winner in his match after PSU defaulted.

Matt Denison (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) fought a close match before falling on the 18th hole to Chad Bricker, while Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Poway) also lost his match to Jim Markovitz, 2 and 1, leaving the team result up to the final two matches.

David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) was dead even with Kevin Foley all day in the No. 1 seed match, ending up at all square through 18. Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) came up clutch for the 'Cats, battling back from two down with three holes to play against T.J. Howe to earn an all square tie over 18 holes and give the team result to Northwestern.
