RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- Northwestern tied a season-best, shooting a 13-over 301 to jump five spots and finish ninth at the 2009 Lady Puerto Rico at Coco Beach Golf Course. The Wildcats, who began the day in a tie for 14th-place, put together the fourth-best final round of the 16-team field and closed out the tournament with a 66-over 930 (317-312-301). It marks the fifth tournament of the year in which the Wildcats finished among the top-10.
Feeding off her success from Monday, sophomore Innapha Tantanavivat (Bangkok, Thailand/David Leadbetter Academy) shot a 2-over 74 through the final round, finishing the 54-hole tournament in a tie for 18th-place -- the second top-20 finish of her NU career. Tantanavivat concluded the tournament with a 13-over 229 (79-76-74), her second-lowest stroke total as a Wildcat.
Tantanavivat was one of four 'Cats to record sub-80 rounds Tuesday, as both senior Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) and freshman Kylie Fuller (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) finished a stroke off the pace with a 3-over 75. Sophomore Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) shot a 5-over 77 on the final day to finish the tournament tied with Hong for second on the NU scorecard at 20-over 236. Fuller placed fourth with a 21-over 237, while freshman Alexandra Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) just missed making it a clean sweep for the 'Cats, shooting an 8-over 80 over the final 18 holes.
Northwestern leapfrogged five schools en route to the ninth-place finish, including Big Ten opponents Minnesota, Michigan and Indiana. The Wildcats closed out the Lady Puerto Rico three strokes better than the 10th-place Gophers and five shots ahead of the 11th-place Wolverines. Conference foe Purdue, ranked sixth in the nation and the host of the event, ran away with the team title, finishing with a 24-over 888 (304-288-296). Second-place Tennessee was 21 strokes back of the Boilermakers, holding off both Georgia and North Carolina State by one shot.
The Wildcats will get some time off before traveling to Rio Verde, Ariz., to compete in the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational March 6-8.
