Northwestern Winter Sports Weekly Release #8 -- PDF format
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcats senior Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) of the women's tennis team and junior Jeremy Nash (Chicago, Ill./Marist) of the men's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Rose paced No. 1 Northwestern in its season-opening dual match wins against New Mexico and Tulsa this weekend. Rose, ranked No. 28 nationally in singles play, posted wins at the No. 1 singles spot vs. New Mexico and at the No. 2 position against the Golden Hurricane. She also teamed with freshman Elena Chernyakova to secure two victories at the second doubles spot for the Wildcats.
Nash came off the bench to spark NU's dramatic victories against Indiana and Wisconsin this week, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting vs. the Hoosiers while adding three steals from his top spot in NU's 1-3-1 zone defense. Nash finished with nine big points against Wisconsin, including a key 3-pointer and a tough driving layup that put the 'Cats up by three with 28 seconds left.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) of the field hockey team. Jill and other NU student-athletes assisted with the Passports for the Arts program at an Evanston elementary school last week. The program aims to educate children about various cultures around the world through visual arts, crafts, dance and music. Jill assisted with many craft projects throughout the program.
