Northwestern Duals Results - Day Two ![]()
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Two days of some of the top fencing competition culminated Sunday at the Northwestern Duals, as the host Wildcats posted a 3-2 record on the final day to finish with a 7-4 record at the Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC). The sixth-ranked `Cats are now 25-7 on the year, as head coach Laurie Schiller continues to move closer to the elusive 1,000-victory plateau, boasting a career record of 980-412.
The morning started off on the right note for the Wildcats, earning easy decisions against a pair of conference opponents with a 25-2 win over Detroit-Mercy, with both the epée and foil teams sporting perfect 9-0 records, and a 27-0 blanking of Wayne State. But just like on Saturday, NU went head-to-head with a pair of ranked opponents in the next two bouts, falling to second-ranked Notre Dame 16-11 before dropping a heart breaking 14-13 decision to eighth-ranked Temple. The `Cats would close out their home meet on a positive note, however, defeating Johns Hopkins 19-8 in the final bout of the weekend.
Senior Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) continued to be the anchor of the Wildcats as she was a perfect 9-0 on the day, upping her two-day record to 18-2. Nemecek remains in third on the all-time wins list at Northwestern with a career record of 379-63, trailing second-place Julia Földi by just seven victories. She also now has a career winning percentage of .857, which would be the best winning percentage in the program's history, surpassing Kate Rudkin's career mark of .856.
On the epée squad, junior Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) led the way with a 4-3 record on the day, upping her two-day total to 9-7. She is 40-11 on the year and 199-66 for her career, one victory shy of 200 for her career. Junior Whitney White (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) was tops among the sabre for Northwestern, going 5-3 on the day and 9-9 for the duals.
The Wildcats now set their sights on a pair of big dual meets this weekend, as the `Cats travel to Durham, N.C., to compete in the Duke Duals Saturday, Feb. 7, before making a quick trip to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Duals on Sunday, Feb. 8. It will be the final two dual meets for Northwestern before competing in the Midwest Conference Championships Feb. 28 and March 1 in South Bend.
