COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Facing a trio of ranked opponents at a two-day quad meet at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, Northwestern trails No. 3 Michigan, No. 9 Ohio State and No. 19 Penn State after nine events held Friday evening.
The Wildcats trail the Wolverines, 137-29, the Buckeyes, 132-35 and the Nittany Lions, 103-63. Action continues tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
Northwestern began the meet with a 3:24.49 in the 400 medley relay from Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney), John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep), Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) and Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) to finish eighth overall.
Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) was NU's top finisher in the 1,000 free with a 9:33.45 to take 13th overall before Nilsson came in behind a trio of Michigan swimmers with a fourth-place effort of 1:37.07 in the 200 free.
Truman Liang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College High School) was 10th in the 50 free with a 21.18 as NU's top finisher, then Kalister Harmon (Olympia, Wash./Capital) took seventh on the 1-meter springboard for the 'Cats with a score of 260.40.
Tenth again was Northwestern top overall place in the 200 back when Beckman turned in a 1:50.63. Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) was just .10 of a second shy of his season-best in the 200 breast, swimming a 2:03.86 to take sixth overall.
Nilsson's 1:47.66 in the 200 fly was good for the senior's second fourth-place overall finish, this time placing him behind a pair of Wolverines and one Buckeye. The Wildcats concluded the first day with a seventh-place effort in the 400 free relay, getting a time of 3:05.36 from Tyler, Liang, Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and Beckman.
