San Antonio to Northwestern Fans: Come Early, Stay Late!

Dec. 18, 2008

EVANSTON, Ill. -- San Antonio offers Northwestern football fans a multitude of holiday events and activities to fill their days and nights while in town for the 16th annual Valero Alamo Bowl on December 29, 2008 at the Alamodome. Fans will want to schedule extra days before and after to experience some of the sights and sounds of the holiday season San Antonio-style, including the decorated River Walk, the city's New Year's Eve bash (one of the largest in the country) and much more. December high temperatures average around 65 degrees.

The famed River Walk will be aglow with more than 122,000 twinkling holiday lights leading the way to restaurants, nightspots, shops and galleries along the picturesque San Antonio River. As stunning as these lights are, they pale in comparison to the city's New Year's fireworks launched from the 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas. Here, in one of nation's largest New Year's celebrations, downtown San Antonio turns into a giant street party featuring live music, food and family fun. Admission is free.

During the day, Wildcats can delve into the history of Texas at the Alamo. Located within walking distance to the Alamodome and many downtown hotels, the Alamo is one of the city's five Spanish colonial missions. All are open to the public free of charge. For a deeply rooted immersion into San Antonio's rich culture, fans can grab a trolley to Market Square, the nation's largest Mexican market, to peruse shops stocked with everything from pearls to piñatas and dine in family owned Tex-Mex cafes.

San Antonio is also known as a phenomenal golf destination with more than 40 courses and practice greens. Courses vary from golf resorts ranked among the best in the world to old quarries reincarnated with scenic challenges. For even more gaming action, Wildcats can catch a Spurs game or two. On Saturday, December 27th, the San Antonio Spurs take on the Memphis Grizzlies at the AT&T Center. But that's not all! There's more Spurs action to follow the Valero Alamo Bowl on Tuesday, December 30th when the Spurs come head to head with the Milwaukee Bucks.
