EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) twice broke a seven-year-old Norris Aquatics Center pool record Sunday to account for one of the highlights of the final day of competition at the TYR Invitational, which Northwestern won over visiting Michigan State and Kenyon College.
The Wildcats finished with 1,260 points to defeat the Spartan's total of 1,211 and 29-time defending NCAA Division III champion Kenyon College's tally of 861. Nilsson was named Swimmer of the Meet after compiling 113 points in the Invitational, 17 more than teammate Adam Beckman's (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) second-place total of 96.
Teams scored points in individual races via three finals heats: an eight-person bonus, an eight-person consolation and a four-person super final for the event championship.
Northwestern began Friday's finals session with three swimmers in the super final of the 50 fly. Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) won the race with a time of 22.55, while Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) was third in 22.91 to barely out-touch teammate Chris Doman's (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio)) 22.93.
John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep) and Truman Liang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College High School) represented NU in the consolation final of the 50 fly, finishing 10th and 11th, respectively.
In the 200 back super final, Beckman trailed Michigan State's Jon LaRocque at the halfway point before blazing ahead in the third 50 yards with a 27.13 split to win with a time of 1:46.97. Nilsson also caught LaRocque to edge him for second by .22 of a second, earning a time of 1:48.28.
Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) won the consolation final of the event with a time of 1:52.36.
Kerr was NU's lone entrant in the 100 free super final, where he came in fourth with a time of 45.50. Liang was NU's top scorer in the consolation final where he put up a third-place time of 46.15 to end up seventh overall.
Northwestern did not enter a competitor in the 1,650 freestyle, which Michigan State won over Kenyon in a two-man race.
In the 200 breast, Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) took top honors for the Wildcats with a 2:03.76, edging his teammate Franklin by .21 of a second. Backstroke specialist Beckman won the 200 breast consolation final with a time of 2:07.34, holding off a hard-charging David Lazarus of Kenyon by .05 of a second.
Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton) and Kyle O'Brien (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau Douglas) swam for the Wildcats in the super final of the 50 back, coming in third (23.92) and fourth (24.04), respectively.
During the morning preliminary heats of the 200 fly, Nilsson broke a seven-year-old pool record held by Kellan O'Connor with his time of 1:45.94. During the evening super final, Nilsson broke it again with an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 1:45.76 to win the event. Mathews was second in the super final behind Nilsson with an effort of 1:48.06 while Park was fourth in the heat with a 1:51.73.
John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) was NU's only other swimmer in the event; he took fifth in the consolation final with a 1:55.49.
Northwestern closed the meet with a second-place time of 2:59.92 from the team of Kerr, Nilsson, Liang and Beckman in the 400 free relay.
Northwestern will return to action during its annual holiday training trip, this year facing Dartmouth on Dec. 22 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
