Northwestern Posts 8-0 Singles Mark at Desert Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Taking on representatives from some of the nation's most talented women's tennis programs, Northwestern posted a perfect 8-0 record in opening round singles action at the Duals in the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif. ITA Midwest Regional champion Samantha Murray, ranked No. 30 nationally, was among those victorious Wildcats, defeating No. 32 Maya Johansson of UCLA in three sets, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Other winners at the Duals included No. 6 Maria Mosolova, who beat another member of last year's NCAA champion Bruins team, No. 35 Yasnin Scnack, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Lauren Lui knocked off Karolina Filipiak of Baylor, 6-4, 6-1, while freshman Elena Chernyakova scored a 6-4, 6-1, win against North Carolina's Meg Fanjoy in flight five singles.

No. 11 Georgia Rose is also back in singles play again this weekend and topped Texas' Krista Domico, 6-2, 6-1, in her opening round match. Freshman Stacey Lee and senior Nazlie Ghazal also advanced at the Duals, ousting Abby Liu of Texas and Jelena Durisic of North Carolina, respectively.

Northwestern was less fortunate in doubles play, where it went 1-3 on the opening day of competition. Senior Keri Robison and Chernyakova scored the win for NU, defeating Anna-Viktoria Lind and Stephanie Wetmore of UCLA, 8-4.

Play continues in California on Saturday.
