Kafka and McCarthy Qualify; Round One of Big Ten Singles Champs Begins Saturday

MADISON, Wis. -- In qualifying play on Friday, two more Wildcats advanced to the main draw of the Big Ten Singles Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Northwestern now has nine representatives in the 64-player main draw, the most of all participating schools.

Both Philip Kafka (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) and Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) advanced to the main draw in Friday's qualifying action. They join seven other Wildcats in the main draw, with the first two rounds scheduled for Saturday.

Friday morning, McCarthy posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Minnesota's Eddie Svenda. He will next face No. 10 seed John Allare of Michigan State.

Kafka fell to MSU's Brendan Kinkopf 6-3, 6-4 in his first match of the day, but advanced to the main draw by winning a consolation qualifying match, 6-4, 6-2, over Michael Koval of Wisconsin. Kafka will next face Jamie Cox of Penn State
