ITA Midwest Regionals Singles Results Day 5
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Not ready to return to Evanston just yet, junior Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) posted wins in the quarter and semifinal rounds to advance to the main draw singles final at the ITA/Wilson Midwest Regional Championships at Michigan State. Murray will face Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame on Tuesday in an effort to claim a Midwest Regional singles for Northwestern for the second straight year.
In her quarterfinal match, Murray ousted Chelcie Abajian of Illinois, 6-2, 6-3. Murray's finals match-up will be her second in a row after defeating Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Frilling had reached the semifinals by knocking out Northwestern's other remaining singles player, freshman Elena Chernyakova (Moscow, Russa/No. 150), 6-3, 6-2.
On the other side of the bracket, Tefft overcame Dunja Antunovic of DePaul, 6-2, 6-1, to earn a berth in Tuesday's final. Tefft, a senior, also captured a Midwest Regionals doubles title Monday with Frilling as her partner.
