EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 10 Penn State upended Northwestern in the Wildcats' second-to-last home game of the season, outshooting NU 17-2 in the first half on its way to a 4-0 victory Sunday at Lakeside Field. Senior goalkeeper Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University H.S.) stopped 12 shots for Northwestern, putting her over the 100-save plateau for a season for the second time in her career.
PSU improved to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play with its seventh consecutive win. Northwestern moves to 6-10 overall, 0-4 in conference action.
This week's NCAA Player of the Week, senior Allison Scola of Penn State, put forth another impressive effort for the Nittany Lions. Scola scored two goals, including one on a penalty stroke late in the first half, and was a constant presence with the ball in the circle for Penn State.
Scola led PSU with nine shots on goal while sophomore Daneen Zug recorded six. Zug put Penn State up 4-0 with 15 seconds left before halftime when her shot from the top of the circle deflected off a Northwestern player's stick and hopped over Kyle.
Despite 22 penalty corners for Penn State, Northwestern's defensive penalty corner unit was up to the challenge, allowing only one goal off of the set pieces. Sophomore defender Sarah Marcincin (Bethlehem, Pa./Blair Academy) came up with two defensive saves in the game for the Wildcats.
This week, Northwestern hits the road for the final time in the regular season when it travels to Ohio State at 2 p.m. Friday before going to No. 11 Louisville for a noon start on Sunday, Oct. 26.
