EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Joe McKeown Era at Northwestern has officially begun. The Wildcats hit the hardwood for the first time this season with a two-hour workout Friday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The practice was intense, spirited and heavy on defense.
"For the first time out, I loved the energy and excitement they brought to the gym, McKeown said. "It was a little sloppy like you expect. The first couple days this time of year are like this everywhere I've coached. There is a lot of nervous energy and you are trying to get players to relax and play well. But overall, I thought it went well."
Fans are welcome to join the Wildcats a basketball Open House following the football game against Purdue on Saturday, Oct. 18th in Welsh-Ryan Arena. Pizza and beverages will be served around 2:15 p.m. before practice begins at 3 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to meet the players and new staff and speak with coach McKeown.
The Wildcats open the 2008-09 campaign on Friday, Nov. 14 when they travel to Chicago State for a 6 p.m. tip.
