EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will participate in the "Dig for the Cure" campaign benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure as the volleyball team hosts Penn State at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The Wildcats will be soliciting both flat donations from fans, as well as pledges for donations per dig recorded by the team throughout the match. There will be a silent auction on team jerseys and a special event t-shirt sale. All money raised will benefit the Chicago-area affiliate of Susan G. Komen.
The Dig for the Cure campaign was originally started in 2003 by former Charlotte head coach Lisa Marston and has spread to volleyball programs across the country. The program has raised more than $340,000 over the past five years. Northwestern is one of more than 100 schools nationally to participate during the 2008 season.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker in memory of her sister who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local affiliates and events, such as the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
As a global leader in the fight against breast cancer, the foundation fulfills its mission through support of innovative breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world. Together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous donors, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised more than $740 million for the fight against breast cancer.
