LA QUINTA, Calif. -- After two rounds of play at The Prestige at PGA WEST, Northwestern is in eighth place in the 16-team field, putting together scores of 20-over par 308 and 10-over par 298 to conclude Monday's action with a total of 30-over 606.
The opening 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament were played in unseasonably cold temperatures with stiff winds, causing scores on the Greg Norman Course to soar. TCU leads the field with a two-round total of 7-over 583, three shots in front of second-place UC Davis and four shots ahead of third-place Stanford.
The rest of the pack is bunched behind Pepperdine and Central Florida, which are tied for fourth at 22-over par 598. Michigan sits in sixth at 24-over par, California is seventh at 29-over and the Wildcats are one stroke behind the Bears in eighth.
Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) leads Northwestern after day one with a two-round total of 5-over 149 (74-75), good for 14th place in the field. Lipsky was under par for the majority of the first round, opening his tournament with a birdie on the par-4 ninth -- his first hole in the shotgun start. He added another birdie at the par-3 13th before four bogies, including three straight on holes 5-7, ended his round at 2-over 74.
He then made bogey on his opening hole of round two before playing the next 14 holes in 2-under with birdies on No. 1 and No. 5. Lipsky again hit the wall at the end of the round, playing the final three holes in 4-over par to finish with a 3-over 75.
Senior Andy DeKeuster (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) is in 26th place at 8-over 152 (75-77). DeKeuster had a rough turn during the first round, playing Nos. 17, 18 and 1 in four over, but the senior battled back to birdie the second and fourth holes to end up with a 3-over 75.
Starting the second round on the ninth hole, DeKeuster made bogey on four of the first five holes he played before earning par on the next 12 in a row. He then carded his fifth bogey of the round on his final hole, the 617-yard par-5 eighth, to end up at 5-over 77.
Freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) had a disastrous first round, playing both his first two holes and last two holes in a combined 6-over par to finish with an 8-over 80. He came back in a big way in the second round, firing a 1-over 73 to enter the final round in 36th place at 9-over 153 (80-73).
Chun began his second 18 holes on No. 8, earning a birdie before running into trouble with two bogies and a double in his next six holes. He answered by playing the final 11 holes of the round in 2-under par fashion, making two birdies, two bogies and adding an eagle on the 526-yard par-5 second hole.
Sophomore Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) finished the first day in 39th place at 10-over 154 (80-74). Patel came back from a tough first 18 with a three bogey, one birdie round in the afternoon.
Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) also scored better in the second round than in the first, ending up in 47th place after day one with a total of 11-over 155 (79-76). Dupont made just one birdie against six bogeys and a double bogey in the first round before countering with two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 12th hole in round two to help card a 4-over 76 in his second 18 holes.
The final round of The Prestige at PGA WEST will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 14, with a shotgun start. Live results are available at Golfstat.com.
