EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 3 Wake Forest scored six first half goals, including three on penalty corners, on its way to an 8-2 win against Northwestern Sunday at Lakeside Field. Junior Elizabeth Dobbs (Wellesley, Mass./St. Ignatius (San Francisco)) rang up her eighth goal of the season and senior Alison Bullock (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) pushed across her fourth of the year in the second half, but it was not enough to keep up with the Demon Deacons' attack.
Northwestern moves to 6-9 overall and 4-2 at home with the loss while Wake Forest improves to 12-2. The game marked a homecoming for Wake head coach Jennifer Averill, who won the Honda Broderick Award and went to two Final Fours as a member of Northwestern from 1983-86.
In the game's first minute, WFU got things rolling with a backhand shot by junior Melissa Martin off an assist by freshman Faith Adams. Minutes later, Wake Forest scored the first of three penalty corner goals when junior Aileen Davis deflected in a hit by senior Minou Gimbrere.
Senior Michelle Kasold and junior Regina Shannon paced the Demon Deacons with two goals apiece in the win. Kasold took seven of Wake Forest's 27 shots in the game.
NU got on the board with a fast-break opportunity five minutes before halftime, pulling Wake Forest goalkeeper Crystal Duffield from her line. Junior Stephanie Fortson (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton) fed Dobbs on the right wing just before Dobbs beat Duffield to the far post.
Northwestern scored again with 13 minutes remaining when Bullock blasted a low shot from the left wing on cage. Duffield dove but could only get a piece of Bullock's shot as it slid under her into the net.
Wake Forest entered the game allowing opponents an average of just 1.83 goals per game.
Next weekend will be the first time this season that Northwestern will play just one contest over a weekend. NU hosts No. 13 Penn State Sunday, Oct. 19, at noon.
