COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State's goal at 02:19 proved to be the game-winner as the Buckeyes defeated the Wildcats Sunday afternoon, 1-0. Senior defender Laura Janowitsch led NU with four shots and forced Ohio State's only save. The 'Cats return home to face Indiana at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lakeside Field.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 6-6-1, 1-3 in the Big Ten. Ohio State improves to 6-4-2, 3-0 in conference.
Ohio State got on the board in the third minute with a goal by Paige Maxwell at 02:19. Maxwell scored off a 1v1 opportunity 17 yards out.
NU tried to respond right after the goal with corner kicks by Sam Greene resulting shots by Sarah Sroka and Janowitsch.
The 'Cats mounted another attack in the 36th minute when Janowitsch had Jessica Palo both had shots in the box blocked. Ohio State forced a Carolyn Edwards save late in the first half, but the first frame ended with OSU holding a 1-0 lead. In a very cleanly-played first half, Ohio State's one foul proved to be the only between the two teams.
Alicia Herczeg opened the second half with a shot wide from the top of the box and a few minutes later, freshman Jill Dunn had a shot from the top of the box blocked.
Janowitsch's shot from the far right wing at 61:00 forced Ohio State's only save of the match. Janowitsch had another shot blocked three minutes later. That shot proved to be NU's last of the match.
Northwestern held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-4, and the shots were even at nine apiece. Edwards made two saves and there were only nine total fouls between the teams.
The Wildcats will have a week off before resuming Big Ten play against Indiana at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lakeside Field.
