CHICAGO -- Sam Greene tallied her first two goals of the year and Alicia Herczeg chipped in one as the Wildcats topped Loyola (Chicago) under rainy skies Friday at Loyola Soccer Park, 3-1.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 4-2. Loyola (Chicago) falls to 2-5. Carolyn Edwards picked up her fourth win in goal.
Northwestern had the first scoring chance of the match when Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) got a run on the right side. The senior found enough space as she found the end line to center a cross to the foot of Herczeg. Her volley was deflected high by the keeper.
Greene put the 'Cats on the board with an unassisted goal. The sophomore just walked up past midfield and found herself all alone for a long shot. Greene launched a shot that deflected off the Loyola goalie and into the net for Greene's first goal and fifth point of the season at 07:33.
NU took a 2-0 lead when Dunn found some room on the left side of the field and put a shot on goal. After a deflection by the Loyola goaltender, Herczeg was there to put home the rebound for her first goal of the year at 13:22
The Ramblers closed to 2-1 on a goal off a corner kick at 30:41 on their only shot of the half and the first frame ended with the Wildcats leading 2-1.
Loyola put plenty of pressure on the Wildcats to start the second half, recording several corner kicks and forcing Edwards to make some key plays in goal as the rain hardened. However, the Wildcats would strike first in the second half when Greene notched her second goal of the contest.
Freshman Jackie Blades (Lakewood, Ohio/Magnificat) popped a ball behind the Rambler defense and Greene had plenty of field in front of her to deposit her second goal of the game and season. Greene now sits with seven points on the year on two goals and three assists.
Northwestern pressured late with several scoring chances, but came away with the 3-1 win over local foe Loyola (Chicago).
Northwestern returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when it hosts local rival DePaul at Lakeside Field.
