EVANSTON, Ill. Northwestern found its offensive stride against Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field, lighting up the scoreboard with four goals in each half on the way to an 8-0 win. Senior Annie Bosslet (Granite City, Ill./Villa Duchesne (Mo.)) tallied two goals and two assists for the 'Cats while senior Alexandra Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) scored a pair of goals for the second straight game.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University H.S.) and sophomore Katie Lynch (Briarcliff, N.Y./Briarcliff) combined for the shutout in goal behind a defense that allowed just two shots-on-goal for Sacred Heart (0-4). It marks the first time since Oct. 9, 2005, against Lindenwood that NU registered a shutout victory.
Northwestern (2-2) got things rolling just 4:07 into the contest when senior Alison Bullock (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) smacked home a rebound off a save by SHU goalkeeper Whitney Mills. Four minutes later, Quinn waited in front of the net for an end line feed from Bosslet before one-timing it past Mills, and the 'Cats were on their way.
Quinn added her second goal just 70 seconds later, making her the first Wildcat to score in back-to-back games since junior Courtney Plaster-Strange (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) turned the trick in three straight contests between Oct. 5 and Oct. 19 last year.
Sophomore Sarah Marcincin (Bethlehem, Pa./Blair Academy) made the score 4-0 when she slammed in a shot from the top of the circle off a perfectly executed penalty corner play.
“I think on offense we played great today, especially in the beginning of the game when we were using each other a lot and creating a lot of two-on-one situations for us to work off of,” said Bosslet, who scored the ninth and 10th goals of her career in the game. “That's what we try to do every game from the backfield all the way up top and we did a good job of it today.”
It was more of the same in the second half for NU. Bosslet gave Northwestern a 5-0 just minutes into the frame while sophomore Kendra Sirak (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) scored the first goal of her career off a feed from sophomore Olivia Standa (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) to make it 6-0. NU capped off its offensive outburst with a goal by Bosslet and the first career goal by freshman Claire Thompson (San Jose, Calif./Leland) in the waning minutes.
Northwestern begins a short practice week before heading to College Park, Md. Thursday where they will take on Georgetown, No. 15 American and No. 2 Maryland in a four-day span.
