EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior running back Tyrell Sutton (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) is one of 75 players nationally who has been named to the preseason watch list for the 72nd annual Maxwell Award for the Collegiate Player of the Year.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell. Tim Tebow of the University of Florida was the recipient in 2007.

Players selected to the initial list were chosen based on their performances during the 2007 season.

Sutton also is a candidate for the Doak Walker award as the nation's top running back. He leads all active running backs nationally in career receiving yards per game (30.3) and career receptions per game (3.7) while entering the 2008 season as the Big Ten's leading active rusher with 2,996 career yards.

He has been named to various preseason teams, including picking up second-team All-Big Ten nods from Athlon Sports, Street & Smith's, Blue Ribbon, Phil Steele's and CollegeFootballNews.com. He also is an honorable mention preseason All-American as chosen by The Sporting News.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced in early November and three finalists for each award will be announced November 25th. The winners of the 2008 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 6, 2009.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2008 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.
