EVANSTON, Ill. -- After starting the home and Big Ten seasons with a bang last weekend, No. 15 Northwestern hosts Loyola (Chicago) Thursday, April 3, before traveling to No. 24 Ohio State for a Sunday doubleheader against its only conference opponent of the weekend.
Thursday's tilt between the Wildcats and the Ramblers at Sharon J. Drysdale Field begins at 4 p.m. The Ohio State doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. CT Sunday. Northwestern has the off date in the Big Ten schedule this Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats are coming off a perfect 4-0 start to the conference season after sweeping their series against Wisconsin and Minnesota at their brand new facility at Sharon J. Drysdale Field last weekend. Northwestern found its bats in its new park, clubbing nine home runs in those four games and racking up a Big Ten-best 36 runs scored. Even more impressive, Minnesota entered its games at NU having surrendered eight home runs all season--and the Wildcats smacked six in two games versus the Gophers.
Junior Tammy Williams (Roscoe, Mo./Osceola) had the best weekend of any Big Ten player, batting .600 and driving in a league-best 11 runs on a league-best three home runs and scoring a league-best six runs in four games. Williams tied the Northwestern single-game record with eight RBIs on two grand slams in a come-from-behind, 17-8, six-inning win over Minnesota Sunday.
Junior Erin Dyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) also blasted three home runs during Big Ten play last week including a grand slam of her own that accounted for all four runs in NU's 4-3 win Saturday against Wisconsin.
Sophomore Lauren Delaney (Jefferson City, Mo./Osceola) was named the Big Ten's Pitcher of the Week after picking up the win in all four of Northwestern's Big Ten games last weekend. She also fired her third no-hitter of the season on Friday against Wisconsin, not allowing the ball to leave the infield against the Badgers.
Sunday's doubleheader at Ohio State begins a six-game Big Ten road stretch for the 'Cats, continuing next weekend with series at Illinois and Iowa. It will be NU's first trip to Iowa since 2004.
