EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named Mike Kalina (Munster, Ind./Munster) of baseball and Lauren Delaney (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) of softball as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Kalina batted .692 (9-for-13) in three games over the weekend, including a 4-for-5 effort with four runs scored in Northwestern's wild, 14-12 (10 innings) victory over No. 21 Oklahoma State on Saturday. Friday against the Cowboys, Kalina went 3-for-4 before concluding the weekend with a 2-for-4 effort Saturday evening against South Florida.
Kalina had a pair of doubles, drove in four runs and scored five times on the weekend to raise his season batting average to .593.
Delaney allowed no runs and just three base hits in 16.2 innings of work at the Coach B Classic. Delaney fired one-hit shutouts against Kansas and Southern Illinois, both teams that are receiving votes in the most recent polls. She also threw 2.2 innings of shutout relief against Bradley.
Delaney racked up 23 strikeouts to average 9.7 per seven innings pitched while holding NU's opponents to a microscopic .058 opponent's batting average.
