EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) of wrestling and Tammy Williams (Roscoe, Mo./Osceola) of softball as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.

Hayes picked up two wins to help the Wildcats to critical conference victories over Purdue and No. 8 Illinois last weekend. With the Wildcats trailing by one point Friday at Purdue, the 12th-ranked Hayes' victory in two tiebreakers gave the Wildcats the lead for good en route to a 21-17 win in West Lafayette.

On Sunday against No. 8 Illinois, the senior put the exclamation point on the important rivalry win on Senior Day at Welsh-Ryan Arena with a 4-2 decision to make the final score 22-11.

Williams batted .786 (11-for-14) during the season's opening weekend, leading Northwestern to a perfect 4-0 record at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. NU picked up wins against No. 1 Arizona and No. 3 Texas A&M, with Williams going 4-for-4 against the Aggies and 2-for-2 with two walks versus the Pac-10 Wildcats.

Williams scored eight runs to average two per game while reaching 146 runs scored for her career to tie former 'Cat Garland Cooper's school record.
