ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 18 Northwestern leads No. 16 Penn State, 78-70, while trailing No. 13 Ohio State, 88-60, Friday after the first day of action at a double-dual meet hosted by Michigan.
The Wildcats, who previously competed against the host Wolverines this season, are scoring their races only against the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions. Both OSU and PSU are participating in a traditional quad-dual meet against all three other schools in the pool.
The second half of the meet begins at 11 a.m. CT tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 2.
Northwestern opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay, getting a time of 3:19.36 from the squad of Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston), John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep), Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija).
Freshman Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) was Northwestern's top finisher in the 1,000 free, swimming a season-best 9:29.90 to finish eighth overall. Tyler's time placed him third against Ohio State and second against Penn State.
Nilsson placed first against both the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions with a 1:39.53 in the 200 free, out-touching Matthias Sigrist from Ohio State by .05 of a second. Three Wolverines finished ahead of Nilsson in the overall standings.
Barbic and Bubolz swept the top two spots against NU's dual-meet opponents in the 50 free, with Barbic swimming a 20.48 and Bubolz turning in a 20.61. Chris Brady of Michigan was the only swimmer to finish ahead of the two 'Cats.
Junior Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) took fourth overall in the 200 back with a 1:48.92, finishing first against Ohio State and second against Penn State. Franklin followed that with a 2:04.79 in the 200 breast to take sixth overall, winning the race against PSU swimmers and coming in third versus OSU.
Nilsson claimed an overall first-place finish in the 200 fly, besting the entire field with a 1:48.09. Trailing Michigan's Matt Patton entering the final 50 yards, Nilsson turned in a blazing split of 27.43 against Patton's 28.32 to come from behind and win by .62 of a second.
The Wildcats concluded the first day of action with a fourth place overall finish in the 400 free relay, getting a time of 3:04.05 from Barbic, Bubolz, Beckman and freshman Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids).
There were no diving events Friday night; both the 1-meter and 3-meter events will be held during Saturday's action.
