EVANSTON, Ill. -- Former Wildcat Eileen Canney has been named the National Professional Fastpitch (NPF) Pitcher of the Year runner-up by TheSoftballChannel.com after leading the league in strikeouts and ERA in her rookie season.

Canney, a two-time NFCA All-America and Big Ten Pitcher of the Year selection, had a 9-6 record with 137 strikeouts and a 1.16 ERA in 109 innings of work for the New England Riptide during the 2007 NPF season. She was reunited with former Wildcat teammates Carri (Leto) Martin and Garland Cooper on the Riptide roster, which was coached by long-time Northwestern mentor Sharon Drysdale.
