ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- A victory in the first round of the Big Ten Singles Championships on Saturday by Peter Rispoli (Naples, Fla. (St. Stephen's (Texas)), followed by a win over the No. 3 seed by Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) highlighted Northwestern's final event of the fall season.
Rispoli defeated Ryan Gormley of Penn State to move on to the second round before falling 6-3, 6-3 to Wisconsin's Nolan Polley.
In the consolation bracket, Sanborn defeated Jeremy Sonkin of Wisconsin, who was the No. 3 seed coming into the tournament. Sanborn won the match 6-0, 7-5 and faces his second round foe on Sunday.
NU's lone senior, Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico) also competed in the tournament, but could not get past Gentry Kaegi, 6-1, 7-5, of Iowa.
