EVANSTON, Ill. -
Hoop season is officially here. Northwestern tips off its 2007-08 men's basketball campaign at 7 p.m. Wednesday as it faces former Big Ten rival University of Chicago in an exhibition contest at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The only way to catch the game live for those who can't attend in person will be via NUsports.com. The official website of Wildcat Athletics will video stream the contest with Dan Platt on the call. The game will not be shown on the Big Ten Network as was originally planned.
NU is coming off a 13-18 overall record a season ago, including a 2-14 mark in Big Ten play. The Wildcats return three regular starters from 2006-07 and nine letterwinners. Kevin Coble led the Wildcats in scoring and rebounding a year ago, but will not be in uniform for Wednesday's contest. Junior guard Craig Moore assumes the role of top returning scorers in action after posting a norm of 8.1 points per game last season.
Head coach Bill Carmody enters his eighth season at the helm of Northwestern, compiling a 95-113 record at NU and a 187-138 record in 11 years overall as a head coach.
The Maroons and Northwestern competed against one another regularly until the mid-1940s when Chicago left the Big Ten Conference. The last meeting between the schools came Nov. 27, 1993 when the Wildcats posted a 94-43 win in their regular-season opener.
The Maroons, who compete at the NCAA Division III level, are coming off a 20-6 season in 2006-07. Senior Nate Hainje is a preseason All-American selection of The Sporting News after averaging 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game last season.
Mike McGrath has a record of 134-72 going into his ninth season as head coach at Chicago.
Northwestern will open its regular season Thursday, Nov. 15 when it hosts Stanford at 8 p.m.
