EVANSTON, Ill. -- After posting a 5-2-2 record in the "first season" of 2007, the Wildcats are ready to kick off Big Ten play with road contests at Indiana and Purdue. The 'Cats are coming off a weekend where they rolled through St. Francis (Pa.), 3-0, and fell in a close contest to Wright State, 1-0. Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) leads the 'Cats in goals with six and Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) leads the way in points with 11.
Quoting Coach Erickson
"Indiana and Purdue are two dynamic teams at the top of the conference as far as their non-conference records and offensive stats," Erickson said. "We learned a lot during our non-conference schedule will be looking to improve in specific areas as we head into these two big games this weekend."
'Cats Put Up Three Goals To Top Red Flashes After a weekend of 1-1 ties, the Wildcats opened last weekend on an offensive note, scoring three goals en route to a 3-0 win over the St. Francis (Pa.) Red Flashes. Junior Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) put the Wildcats on the board in the 15th minute with her first goal of 2007.
Schneeman continued her hot start to 2007 when she scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year at 21:09. Hans gave NU a three-point cushion when she scored her fourth goal of the year off a pass from Jenny Dunn. Hans now has 76 career points--good for first place on NU's all-time list. She has now passed head coach Stephanie Erickson for NU's all-time lead in goals and points.
'Cats Making Them Count Northwestern has been making the most of its shot opportunities this season. While the 'Cats are averaging 14.22 shots per game, 63 of their 128 total shots have been on goal--good for a .492 shots-on-goal percentage. Senior Shannon Schneeman has the most economical with her shot opportunities of any offensive regular with a .789 SOG%.
NU Has Six-Game Unbeaten Streak Snapped
When Wright State topped the Wildcats on Sunday, it snapped a six-game unbeaten streak -- NU's longest since it went unbeaten during a six-game winning streak in 2005. The 'Cats went 4-0-2 during that streak with a pair of 1-1 ties against Penn and Colgate, and wins over UNC Greensboro, Florida Atlantic, Loyola and St. Francis (Pa.).
Dunny Finding Her Stride
Junior Jenny Dunn is finding her stride after a slow start to the 2007 campaign. After netting only two points on one goal through the first seven games, Dunn broke out last Friday with a goal and an assist against St. Francis (Pa.). She scored the game-winner to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead on Friday and then notched an assist on Kelsey Hans' goal in the second half.
Coming Out Firing
Senior Kelsey Hans has not wasted any time taking her chances at the opposing net. Hans, who now has 248 shots for her career, has fired off 35 through the 'Cats' first nine games. She leads the team and the Big Ten in the category and has 15 shots on goal with four goals. The Wildcats have taken 128 shots as a team. Jenny Dunn is second on the team with 20.
