Northwestern men's soccer forward David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) has been named one of 20 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. He is one of two candidates who hail from the Big Ten Conference, joining Ohio State's Eric Brunner.
From the list of 20 candidates, a national media committee will select 10 finalists in October for the 2007 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Those ten names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote beginning October 16 and concluding
November 21. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches, media and sponsors to determine the recipient of the award. Winners will be announced during the NCAA Soccer Championships, scheduled on December 14-16 in Cary, N.C.
Roth, who carries a 3.047 grade-point average while majoring in communication studies, is Northwestern's all-time leader with 30 career assists and is the Big Ten's active leader in the category. He is also recognized for his character both on and off the field as well as donating his time to numerous community service efforts. Roth has helped guide Northwestern to its best start to a season in school history (6-0-1) and a No. 6 national ranking.
The Lowe's Senior CLASS Award was first created in 2001 in response to the trend of college basketball players leaving school early to turn professional and has since expanded to include soccer. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the CLASS award was designed to honor the attributes of seniors who remain committed to their university and elect to pursue the many rewards that a senior season can bring. The award was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg, who continues to serve as Honorary Chairman, and has recognized winners in men's and women's basketball for six years.
Lowe's extended the award in the spring of 2007 to include four other NCAA sports: baseball, softball, men's hockey and men's lacrosse. With the addition of men's and women's soccer in fall 2007, a total of eight sports are now included in the awards program.
