EVANSTON, Ill. -- On a perfect sun-filled day when NU debuted its brand new FieldTurf facility, senior Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) scored her 30th career goal to pass head coach Stephanie Erickson as the program's most prolific goal-scorer. Hans' tally at 46:01 broke a record that stood for more than 10 years. Senior Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) added two goals to give the Wildcats a 3-0 win over Loyola (Chicago) Wednesday afternoon.
"I felt like it was coming for Kelsey today," Erickson said. "I told her at the half I thought she could turn on this team and that she should give me a high-five when she scored. It could not have been prettier for a record-setting goal and I'm very proud of her."
With the win, Northwestern improves to 4-1-0 on the year while Loyola (Chicago) falls to 1-4-0. Senior Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East) picked up her second shutout of the season.
Hans had her first opportunity to break Erickson's record in the 27th minute, but was denied by the Rambler keeper. NU got on the board a few minutes later as Schneeman added her third goal of the season on a header to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 31:11. Freshman Jennifer Baumann (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) notched the assist with a serve from the end line. Schneeman, charging hard for the post, put it away.
Wildcat faithful who had made the trip to check out the new field, thought they saw Erickson's record fall in the 39th minute, but Hans' shot off a run down the left side hit the post.
After Baumann hit the post in the 42nd minute, Schneeman converted for her second goal off a serve by sophomore Katherine Sampson (San Francisco, Calif./Drew School) to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at 41:13. Schneeman is off to a strong start in her senior campaign with four goals through five matches.
After NU took a 2-0 lead into halftime, Hans wasted little time etching her name on top of NU's all-time goals chart. Junior Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) assisted on Hans' goal -- a well-executed turn and shot from the top of the box. It was her second of the year and 30th of her career. With 71 career points, Hans is only two behind Erickson's all-time mark of 73.
Even with a 3-0 lead after Hans' goal, the Wildcats kept attacking. The 'Cats racked up 18 shots and four corner kicks for the afternoon. The second half was more physical than the first as the teams committed a total of 13 fouls in the second frame.
Freshman Carolyn Edwards (Lincolinshire, Ill./Stevenson) saw her first regular-season action between the pipes for the Wildcats as she relieved Johnston for the final 12 minutes of the match.
Wildcat freshman Alison Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) performed the first national anthem at the new Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats return to action at 4 p.m. Friday against Penn at Lakeside Field.
