LINCOLN, Neb. -- Northwestern battled Nebraska to a scoreless first half Sunday, but the Cornhuskers used two late goals to top the Wildcats, 2-0. Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville), Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) led NU with three shots each.
The loss drops Northwestern to 1-1 on the young season while Nebraska improves to 1-0.
The Cornhuskers put pressure on the 'Cats early, taking 10 shots in the first half and forcing senior goalkeeper Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East) to make four saves in the opening frame.
The 'Cats weathered the first-half storm and the teams went into the half tied at zero.
The Wildcats picked up their offensive pressure in the second half, taking seven shots and forcing four saves by the Nebraska keeper. However, the Cornhuskers would get on the board first with a goal in the 72nd minute.
Alexa Cardona connected with the upper left portion of the NU goal to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead. The Huskers added an insurance goal in the 85th minute.
Nebraska took 22 shots in the contest compared to Northwestern's 11 and registered eight second-half corner kick opportunities. NU was economical with its shot selection, registering six shots on goal out of its 11 total.
Schneeman registered two shots on goal and junior Jenny Dunn (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Louisville) chipped in with two shots.
NU next travels to Boca Raton, Fla., for contests against UNC Greensboro and Florida Atlantic beginning Friday. The 'Cats open their home schedule on September 12 against Loyola (Chicago).
