Wildcats Fall to Top-Seeded Ohio State in Big Ten Championship, 4-0

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eighth-seeded Northwestern's run in the Big Ten Championship came to an end Friday as the Wildcats fell to top-seeeded and third-ranked Ohio State at Purdue's Schwartz Tennis Center, 4-0.

The 'Cats fall to 10-14 while Ohio State improves to 25-1.

Ohio State took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 1, Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./Univ. of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) and Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) fell to 14th-ranked Devin Mullings and Chris Lingemann, 8-3.

The No. 3 team of Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium LobrÜgge) and Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico) played a tight match with Bryan Koniecko and Steve Moneke, but the Buckeyes prevailed to clinch the doubles point, 8-6.

At No. 2, Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) were up 7-6 over 31st-ranked Drew Eberly and Justin Kronauge, but the match was stopped when the point was clinched.

Ohio State took the first three singles matches to win the dual 4-0. The 'Cats played singles without the services of Tempke, who could not compete due to injury. At No. 3, Christian fell to 28th-ranked Devin Mullilngs in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

Dwyer, who moved up to No. 2 in place of Tempke, was defeated by seventh-ranked Moneke, 6-1, 6-3.

The 22nd-ranked Koniecko downed Lock at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 4, Sanborn was down 1-0 to Kronauge when the dual was ended.
