IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Northwestern took the doubles point and won 4-of-6 singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over Iowa Sunday in its final Big Ten road contest. Senior Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) took a straight-set win at No. 4 singles.
The win improves Northwestern to 8-13 overall, 3-6 in the Big Ten. Iowa falls to 7-11 overall, 0-8 in the Big Ten.
The 'Cats got on the board first by capturing the doubles point. Christian and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) topped Gregory Holm and Walker Grimes at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
Senior Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium LobrÜgge) and junior Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico) defeated Christian Bierich and Reinoud Haal, 8-6.
At No. 1, Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./Univ. of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) fell to the 50th-ranked pair of Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie, 9-8 (5).
In singles, Tempke rolled at No. 1, downing Monsjou in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Lock took his No. 2 match over Ritchie, 6-1, 6-2.
Dwyer fell at No. 3 to Bierich in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Christian topped Haal in straight sets at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0.
Tommy McGeorge needed a third-set "superbreaker" to defeat Gomez at No. 5, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (7), while Sanborn took a three-setter from Patrick Dwyer at No. 6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Northwestern closes out the regular season at Noon Sunday against Michigan State. It will be the final home match for NU's three seniors: Tempke, Lock and Christian. Also, Tempke will be presented with the inaugural Arlie Weiss Memorial Sportsmanship Award.
