HONOLULU -- Sophomore Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) extended her winning streak to eight with a win over 13th-ranked Zsuzsanna Fodor at No. 1, but fifth-ranked California downed 10th-ranked Northwestern Saturday night, 6-1.
The loss drops Northwestern to 9-4 while Cal improves to 14-3. All four of NU's losses have come to top-10 teams.
Cal got out to a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 1, the 10th-ranked pair of Rose and senior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) fell to fourth-ranked Fodor and Suzie Babos, 8-5.
Freshman Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) and junior Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) fell to Bojana Bobusic and Claire Ilcinkas at No. 3, 8-1.
NU's lone win came at No. 2 doubles where freshman Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and sophomore Keri Robison (Decatur, Ill./Keystone National) defeated Nina Henkel and Stephanie Kusano, 8-5.
Rose, ranked 15th, extended her singles winning streak to eight with a straight-set win over Fodor, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1. Babos, ranked fourth in singles, topped No. 23 Murray at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4.
At No. 3, Prousis fell to the 17th-ranked Henkel in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-4, while No. 79 Kusano downed Lui at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1.
Marion Ravelojaona took No. 5 singles over freshman Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine), 6-3, 6-4, and sophomore Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) forced a third-set superbreaker at No. 6, but fell to Cristina Visico, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (8).
The Wildcats welcome Illinois for their Big Ten home opener at 11 a.m. Saturday.
