AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Northwestern advanced all six of its entries to the round of 16 of the NCAA Wrestling Championships. The 'Cats went 6-for-6 in Session One with junior Nick Hayes (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central) providing the dramatics with an upset win over eighth-seeded Matt Stolpinski of Navy. Session Two begins at 5:30 p.m. CT and all six 'Cats will be wrestling for spots in the quarterfinals.
Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio), Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick), Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) all won their first round matches.
Through one session, the Wildcats are tied with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State for 10th place in the team standings.
Hayes used an upset victory over Navy's eighth-seeded Stolpinski to advance to the round of 16 at 174 lbs. Hayes escaped in the first tiebreaker period and kept the Midshipman under wraps in the second tiebreak to take the 6-5 decision.
The first period ended with Hayes maintaining a 3-2 lead. The Wildcat scored the first points with a takedown and took the lead back with an escape after Stolpinski reversed.
Stolpinski used a takedown and an escape to pull ahead, 5-4, but Hayes came back with an escape late in the third to tie the match at 5-5 and send it into overtime.
The first overtime period ended scoreless and Hayes sealed the decision with an escape in the first tiebreaker period.
Hayes faces Columbia's ninth-seeded Matt Palmer in the third round.
Precin advanced to the second round with a win over Wyoming's Nick Ramirez at 125 lbs. The first period was filled with action as the freshman struck first with a takedown, but Ramirez came right back with a two-point reversal to knot the score at 2-2.
Precin notched an escape and another takedown in the first period to take a 5-2 lead into the second frame.
Precin controlled the rest of the match to take the 7-4 decision and faces Stanford's third-seeded Tanner Gardner in tonight's third round.
Lang's match against Matt Ciasulli of Lehigh started slow with a scoreless first period. The top-seeded Wildcat found his groove late in the second period, scoring a takedown and a three-point near-fall. Lang would have had a fall, but the second period expired before the referee granted the pin.
The junior rode out the third to take the 6-0 decision with riding time. He faces Mitch Mueller of Iowa State in his third-round match.
Herbert cruised into the round of 16 with an 11-3 major decision over Arizona State's Greg Gifford at 184 lbs. The first period progressed with little action as the top-seeded Herbert got on the board first with a takedown and a surrendered a late escape to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second frame.
The Wildcat took hold of the match with a reversal and a two-point takedown in the second and led 6-2 going into the final period. The junior registered four more points on two takedowns and used a substantial riding time advantage to take the 11-3 major decision.
He faces Navy's Antonio Miranda in the third round later today. Herbert scored a major decision over the Midshipman earlier this season.
Tamillow used a 6-0 decision over Lehigh's Matt Cassidy to advance to the round of 16. The third-seeded junior converted on an early shot to record the two-point takedown. Cassidy never got on the board as Tamillow used another takedown, an escape and a riding time advantage to take the 6-0 decision.
He faces Maryland's Hudson Taylor tonight.
Fox took on Lehigh's Paul Weibel at heavyweight in the third match between the Wildcats and the Mountain Hawks in the opening session. Weibel kept the match close against the fourth-seeded junior, but Fox prevailed with a 10-6 decision.
The Wildcat scored first with a takedown in the opening period. He used another two-pointer to take a 4-1 lead going into the second period.
Weibel managed six points on Fox, mostly with escapes, but the junior registered two takedowns in the third and used riding time for the 10-6 decision.
Fox will battle Missouri's Mark Ellis in the round of 16.
