EVANSTON, Ill. -- With the conclusion of the Big Ten regular season Saturday night, the Conference has announced the pairings for this year's Big Ten Tournament, which is being contested March 8-11 at the United Center in Chicago.
Northwestern (13-17, 2-14) earned the tournament's No. 10 seed and will face the No. 7 Michigan State Spartans (21-10, 8-8) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8. ESPN2 is televising the first-round game.
The Wildcats, who finished the regular season tied with Penn State (11-18, 2-14), split their regular season series with the Nittany Lions, so determining the No. 10 and 11 seeds went to the next tiebreaker -- each team's record vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular season standings continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage (even if the number of games played against the team or group is unequal).
Both the Wildcats and Nittany Lions were 0-2 against Ohio State and Wisconsin, but Northwestern went 0-1 vs. Indiana, while Penn State was 0-2, so the Wildcats gained the advantage and the higher seed.
