MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwestern is in seventh place at the Big Ten Championships after two days of competition, just one point out of sixth after a record-breaking performance by the Wildcats' 800 free relay.
In the final event of Friday's action, the team of Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood), Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's), Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) and Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) blazed to a school-record time of 7:13.92 to shatter the old Northwestern mark of 7:17.85 set back in 1994.
The NCAA `B' provisional qualification standard gave the Wildcats a second-place finish in the event.
"The girls came into the 800 relay fired up and they turned in a tremendous swim," head coach Jimmy Tierney said. "That particular relay has been one of our signature events in past years, so to not only finish second but to also break the school record was pretty special."
As a team, Northwestern has 206 points, one point behind sixth-place Purdue and 77 points ahead of eighth-place Ohio State. Indiana leads the meet with 453.5 points.
Northwestern began Friday night's finals with a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.48. Freshman Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines), Jessie Bailis (Omaha, Neb./Millard North), Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) comprised the relay for NU.
In the 400 IM, Shishkoff qualified for the consolation final with a 4:20.67, then lowered that time to an NCAA `B' provisional qualification time of 4:19.41 to take 11th place in the finals. Classmate Mary Beth Francis (San Diego, Calif./Mission Viejo) narrowly missed the consolation final, ending up 18th during the prelims with a 4:24.22.
Braun earned a spot in the championship final of the 100 fly with a strong 54.71 before taking eighth with a 55.35 `B' cut during the evening session. Freshman Rachel Rys (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos) qualified for the consolation final with a 55.86, then lowered that time to a 55.57 to win the heat and finish ninth overall.
Freshman Stacy Congdon (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) also swam the 100 fly, ending up 30th with a 57.18.
Bad luck struck the Wildcats in the 200 free when junior All-American Hupman DQ'ed during the prelims. Kociss was NU's top finisher with a 23rd-place time of 1:51.06. Wong was 35th with a 1:51.92.
Northwestern sent two swimmers to the championship final of the 100 breast, with both Bailis and Fry qualifying. Both then lowered their times from prelims to the evening session, with Bailis taking fourth in 1:03.06 and Fry ending up sixth with a 1:03.30. Both times were NCAA `B' cuts.
In the 100 back, Szymanksi qualified for a second swim in the consolation heat, where she finished 16th with a season-best time of 56.66. Sophomore Sara White-Delehoy (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) was 46th with a 1:01.23.
In diving, freshman Tania Lyerly (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) was NU's high scorer with a career-best 227.30 points, good for 30th place. Junior Beth Campbell (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick) was 33rd with a score of 215.85.
The meet concludes Saturday, Feb. 10, with prelims starting at 11 a.m. CT and finals kicking off at 7 p.m. with the final heat of the 1,650 freestyle.
