EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University's department of athletics and recreation has been recognized for its "Overall Excellence in Diversity" by Texas A&M's Laboratory for Diversity in Sport.

The award is presented on an annual basis by the laboratory, and recognizes athletic departments that excel in the area of diversity.

Departments are recognized in eight categories: diversity strategy, sex diversity of department employees, racial diversity of department employees, value and attitudinal diversity of department employees, graduation of African American male student-athletes, graduation of African American female student-athletes, Title IX compliance (substantial proportionality) and overall excellence in diversity.

Northwestern, which was highlighted for its graduation of both male and female African American student-athletes and its value and attitudinal diversity of department employees, is one of 10 I-A schools to receive the overall excellence award.

"Northwestern and its athletic department is proud to receive this recognition," said Mark Murphy, director of athletics. "This is a major issue on campuses across the country, and we take great pride in valuing and excelling in diversity."
